"It's Nice to be Important;
but More Important to be Nice"
Several months ago a man passed away who was no stranger to anyone.
In Indiana, he was a legend in his own time. A man who spent his
entire life living and working for others. At his wake, several
hundred people from all over Indiana and other parts of the country
came to pay their final respect.
Thrown into the legendary playgrounds of coaching Indiana Basketball
to the coach who was portrayed in Hoosiers was only a small part
of Marvin's career. I was so unabashedly humbled when his wife took
me aside and thanked me for helping him with his career path.
What she didn't remember was him taking me aside as a very young
and a frightfully inexperienced young educator in an important administrative
position. His message...Dr. Jackson "it's nice to be important;
but it's more important to be nice�"
While we wrestle with technology and its influence on our lives
and business, the humble energy needed to be nice is becoming a
lost art.
I have forgotten that message so many times over the years. It
is so simple to embrace; yet, so often lost when exposed as a human
skill. As we enter the new millennium, each of us should take a
few minutes and remember the importance of Marvin Wood's message.
